No lights in the garage

Range Rover Blues:
You could rig up some 12 volt spotlights (kitchen lights, that sort of thing) then to make them last loinger buy some 12volt LED bulbs for them, they consume only about 1.5 watts rather than 35 watts like kitchen spotlights.

a small inverter and a lead lamp, or 12v caravan striplights, or as said a B&Q genny mine was £27 on offer  ;)

I use two caravan strip lights on a small sealer rechargable battery lasts months with occasional use but I also have a spare care battery if I am doing a lot in there.
Lights are about £5 each from caravan brakers and a good battery from a scrap yard shoudl be no more that £30 for the lot.
Remember flurecents give a good light and use very little power, a generator is expensive to run and noisy

My garage is quite large, and I had the same problem.  All  I did was get three strip lights, the same as you have in the kitchen, and I run them off a little generator I got from Ebay for £30.  I've built a wooden canopy for the generator to sit under to keep it dry and suppress the noise a bit.
