I think you could quote just about anyone in politics throughout history and they later went totally against what they said. But maybe with not quite such an horrific result as that particlar one!

That line being in a pretenders song I was working and not entirely listening when it was on... I swear I misheard it as "we are all of us in the gutter, but some of us are looking for the stairs" presumably a more useful interpretation for the practically minded.
