MOT man won't test my 110
V8MoneyPit:
Not an official source, but...

Since this subject pops up from time to time, I have e-mailed VOSA for confirmation. I've also asked them for advice to be given to those who have been refused a test. I'll report back as soon as I hear anything from them.
Mr Bump:
I doubt there's any legislation that says LR's are exempt from <whiney voice> "health and safety" lol. if it's too heavy for his lift it's too heavy for his lift..
Garage bloke is just being daft if he doesn't want to look up the difference between max gross weight and unladen. Maybe he doesn't want the work? and I thought there was a recession?
V8MoneyPit:
Ah, the old H&S gem
The testing classes are all defined by gross laden weight and the Defender is 3050Kgs. The exemption is not specific to Land Rover as such, but covers 4 wheel drives with 'dual purpose'. What I'm hoping for from VOSA is a definitive answer so we can go to the relevant MOT testers and point them in the right direction.
I used to run a Minor 1000 van which never had a VIN plate. Every time I took it to the MOT station, he questioned it. I had to tell him to RTFM every year (although I might not have used those exact words!). Only vehicles after August 1980 have to carry a VIN plate. The same problem now exists with the computer based system as with the Land Rover testing class. Whoever wrote the software didn't allow for all the historic exemptions and even testers who know the details have trouble because the system is inflexible.
JumboBeef:
The 110 hard top I recently sold was plated at 3500KG and had to be MOTed at a Class VII testing centre (cost was a couple of quid more).
The other 110 we have is plated at 3050KG and we have never had a problem getting this MOTed at a 'normal' MOT station.
Jimbo:
I had exactly the same problem when I first got my 110 Hard top. The local MoT place wouldn't touch it, stating that it needed to go for Class VII due to the GVW of the vehicle. I searched the web, found the Glencoyne site that's been mentioned earlier, and also emailed VOSA (can't find the damn reply at the mo). The response from VOSA was that the vehicle can be tested at a 'normal' test station, they even quoted the bit from the testers handbook which explained it.
I then rang a local(ish) independant LR garage, and they said the same thing as the first place I tried - no, it's too big..........but then I told them about VOSA's email, and would they mind checking the relevant section in the manual - "no probs, what's your number we'll call you back in 10mins". Thought I'd never hear from them again, but 20mins later, they did ring back and said yep, bring it in 8am tomorrow and we'll do it.
I now take both the Disco and Defender to this garage (Howe Engineering, buntingford), and get excellent service, tea whilst they do the MoT, and an endless supply of current Landy mags to read.
