RRC 3.9 efi on LPG
discowoman:
as per the title, been looking at these (im missing the V8 burble - but not the fuel costs).. now in real terms, how does the 3.9 on LPG compare to a diesel 200/300?
sorry to say it'll be a 'chelsea tractor' with the odd bit of greenlaning thrown in perhaps once a year, so I need to know what the running costs should be based on 5000 miles a year - mainly around town .
We used to run a 3.5 V8 on petrol and were getting an average of 18mpg - so if its half the price then that equates to 36 miles to the same amount of cash? is that correct?
Also as the one im looking t is on an F pate - is there anything that should be a first port of call to check out?
Final question, does the LPG system need to be serviced???
MrTFWitt:
Half price is a bit optimistic as it uses more lpg but this is offset by the lower price.
http://www.lpg-vehicles.co.uk/ has lots of info but reckon on only a 40% saving.
http://www.go-lpg.co.uk/range.html Has some figures on running a 3.9i and claim 37.1 Mpg
From personal experience I have had an LPG vehicle and probably wont have another.
- Mine did 75 miles on a full tank of LPG and sputtered to a halt
- The boot was half taken up with a depth charge like cylinder and I didnt want to stack stuff on top of it.
- Filling up was tricky, lots of safety features on the forecourt equipment and it took 10 minutes of mucking about to get it connected properly
- went past five stations before I found any LPG
- You cant take one on the Eurotunnel, so no booze cruises with it, not that you would get much in the boot!
On only 5,000 miles a year its going to take a while to offset the £2,000 conversion.
This will take less time if you are heading into London regularly as LPG vehicle are currently congestion charge exempt.
Might be cheaper to buy one thats already been converted but make sure it comes with an installation certificate, mine didnt so I sold to to a Polish chap for export.
Discopoo:
Buy the right one and have it serviced and it is the same as a Deisel to run. I have a 200tdi Disco and my Bro runs a RRC on Gas. He went for the underslung tanks and about 140 miles on 60 ltrs. At anywhere between 45 and 55p a litre it works out at about 36-40 to the gallon, better than my tdi.
discowoman:
Thanks guys, yes it has already been converted - I think the tank is in the boot (still waiting for pictures), have owned and run several V8 RR's in the past and miss them - but with the price of fuel at the moment its a worry with the cost of filling up - hence looking at LPG converts.
this is the RR ( I have dealt with him before so its not an unknown quantity)

Bush Tucker Man:
Just looked at a site I was told about that offers LPG conversions for the (V8 engined) XJR & XKR
£2,950

However, it does look a nice neat application in the N/A engine bay
I was also told they offered a diesel conversion for the XJ40's, & used the Nissan 3.5 :-k
