engine number location

Can anyone enlighten me to where I can find the engine number on my P38 4.6ltr petrol engine. I thought it was near the dipstick but is not.

Range Rover Blues:
On the outside edge of the top of the block, between cylinders 3 and 5, so yes near the dipstick.

If it's not there then chances are the engine has been out for some work.
