I worked for BT in Nottingham as a 999 call handler and 100 customer services operator (glorified receptionist!) and while I was in the job I did absolutely love it simply because you are not only the first point of contact you're also the come back in the case of transmission failure between the emergency authority and although we got quite a lot of genuine calls I'd say 70% of the calls throughout the day were hoaxes.
Whilst some made us annoyed there was also a few that made us chuckle a bit.
One call I received the day after I finished my training was a gentleman that was quite distressed, in which case we had to monitor the call until we are advised by the EA that we can clear, the gentleman requested and upon putting him through I went in to monitor the situation. The poor bloke still very much worried upon being asked by the Police operator what the problem was replied..."You're going to think I am an absolute pillock...I've locked myself in the car and I can't seem to get out of it!"
Cruel to laugh but that one made my day as I'd received a pretty nasty call at the start of my shift about a youth in Glasgow that had been stabbed in the throat and had to monitor that and then immediately after I had a multiple EA request to a fatal accident on the M6 Northbound.
Other than the hoaxes and distressing calls though it was a brilliant job and it's also taught me how to keep my head screwed on in tricky or nasty situations.
