I'd say it was more that personality defined musical taste.

However, to me it makes sense, classical music and heavy metal are remarkably similar in many respects, and some bands have managed to combine the two quite well :)

i find though that a lot of the time those who liked certain types of non-mainstream pop music liked it cos their mates did, and then got to like it for themselves.

i remember the heady days of 1986 when someone got me a tape of master of puppets in the school bus... id "heard" of metallica but when i listened to it i liked the noise, the aggression, the rhythm, so much better than what was on in the charts at the time.

been on a downhill slope ever since!
