Catalyst removal

I was chatting earlier about removing the cat from my 95 300tdi Disco, however another discussion later brought up some questions,

Does removing the cat from a diesel engine have any negative effects like increased fuel consumption?

Does a diesel need back pressure in the exhaust to ensure the engine runs correctly?

I know a diesel of this age doesn't actually need to have a cat fitted (or particle trap) but will it cause any harm by removing it?

Any thoughts please?

I've just done mine and I think its a little better on juice tbh, feels happy a lot more free reving.

I agree with Karlo, more free reving, fuel consumption has not increased, maybe slightly more mpg but not really checked, still get around 30mpg, plus it is a cheap alternative to replacing a knackered CAT any way and one less thing to fail on the MOT.

it has no negative implications removing it ok mot wise does not effect back pressure will more than likly give you better mpg their is a couple of ways to do it get the replacement pipe and just swap it over or cheaper way if you are handy with a mig cut it out and just weld in a section of pipe
