AND ANOTHER THING !!!
« on: July 25, 2008, 19:10:59 »
I've had a bit of an oil leak over the last few days so i gave the engine a good wash down and started to look for the source.
I found a fair leak on the exhaust manifold, at the front exhaust port.

The two nuts on this section of the manifold were a bit loose and oil vapor was blowing out of the very slight gap. Now this got me thinking, as this isnt a normal place to have an oil leak, so is the head gasket leaking oil into the cylinder or are the valve stem seals leaking ?
How can i check or should i just take the head off, do the valve stem seals anyway and put on a new gasket.
The old truck has done 191 000 miles uses a bit of oil but not any water.

It still pulls Ok but is a bit smokey on start up and full throttle.

Hey Wizard, either the oil is coming down past the stem oil seals or coming up past the rings.... Do a compression test and see whats happening there before taking the head off. If its rings, is it cost effective to rebuild or better with a good 2nd hand engine? Hopes its just the stem seals....

On another note its not unburnt diesel mixing with carbon???? That'll look black like oil too...... Maybe look into the exhaust ports and see if there are any clean ones due to the diesel washing them..... Just a thought...

The engine pulls ok, i was doing 70 with a caravan on back from Billing last week, but it does seem to battle on hills a bit.
I have a compression tester somewhere, but i dont know if it reads high enough for a diesel.
i will keep you upto date over the next few weeks.

You will probably need the use of a diesel tester, petrols are meant to have a ration of around 7:1, whereas a diesel is between around 14:1 up to 24:1

I had a bit of a poke about today and noticed air blowing back out of the air filter. Not a major amount but enough to notice and in rhythm with a piston going up & down. So it seems to point to the head.
