Sounds like a corroded contact somewhere- probably in the fuse box.  Be ready for when it dies as you drive along :)

It's cetainly worth cleaning those contacts otherwise you'll get something delicate and expensive to fix hitting you up the rear when the brake lights fail.

the series I had did this as well. I found whilst all bolted together and moving along if I pulled the top of the dash towards me a little bit the needles went up, when I let go the needles dropped again! Didnt matter how many times I removed the dash to find out why it always happened and never did find the fault!
