tapping noise

(1/3) > >>

peasey:
hi everyone, after much nagging from the mrs i have parted from my v8 but i have managed to buy a tidy diesel 3oo tdi and i must say im impressed by it!yeah ok it needs work but the big jobs have been done, like inner wings, boot floor, rear door shuts, and those oil leaks.so i set about doing the clean up on the engine and making it clean and shiney flusing the intercooler and just removing 120,000 of crud build up.but i have a question for you fellas that know more about the 300tdi engine than me.it seems to have a loud ticking noise that increases when you rev her and seems to be coming from the left side of the engine when you look from the front,is this normal and do they all sound like that?

bambamjj:
I had exactly the same, thought it was the tappets so adjusted them but was still there, to confirm this whilst engine is running take off the oil filler cap, it should get noisier if its the tappets, if not as in my case it will be the vacuum pump, mine got very loud in the end but replaced it and now it has no tapping at all.  30 Min job but about £100. to fix, if the pump goes the brakes dont work so well.

Hope this helps

Jon

peasey:
thanks for that super quick reply mate i have done the tappets yesterday as i too thought it was those so looks like im going to wave goodbye to some cash soon then is there any way of repairing the vac pump or is it a sealed unit type thing?

bambamjj:
It is sealed unit, i know somewhere there is a link to fix if it leaks, to be honest i think new is best, the breaks had to be stood on to work with mine when it went, on the motorway.  It is easy to do too.

peasey:
ok mate thanks im going to pull it off in a bit and post my findings thanks again.
