brake vac pump

Hi I have got a new vac pump to fit to eso but the manual says number four pisston needs to be tdc how do I know when its at tdc, and yes I know what tdc is. ;)

In my haste to replace this on my Disco I forgot to read the manual in regards to engine position and just removed it...!!!!! It was only when I tried to fit the new one I discovered it wouldn't fit..!!!

I'm sure this wasn't the correct way of soving the problem but it was getting dark and I really needed the car back on the road for the morning. So I just gave the engine a very quick turn over on the starter and then tried it. It took a few tries but I got ther in the end...!!!
