water pump renew

hi all, can anyone tell me if you can change the water pump on a 96 16v injection vitara without touching the timing belt and idler as the haynes manual say , just i not trust myself where timing belts are concerned (to much damage if i get it wrong).

as far as i no neil its the way the manual  says best thing to do is mark up the pulleys or stick some bolts in to lock off the pulleys
