How can I tell whats broke this time ?
landroverkeith:
 again my disco has died in only the way it.... could!
A very loud bang followed by a loss of traction then back again shortly followed by some very loud crunching and grinding noises [-o<
i thought at first wheel bearing again!! but when i jacked the rear wheel up there is very little to no movement at all certainly not enough to justify the noises
is it possible that its the diff? i always thought that if u bust a diff u would have no traction at all unless u moved the transfer lever into diff lock.... I dunno
currently sat in the bottom of a very very veryyyyy deep bottle of kopperberg with the hump
cheers keith
Disco-Ron:
Sounds likely to be one of the diffs, it may have broken, hence the loss of traction, and then something jammed, which is why it came back..... the only way to establish if it's the rear, is with the handbrake on, to jack up one wheel, and try and turn it, with the other rear wheel on the ground, AND the handbrake on, if it turns, somethings broke, if not, then it may be the front!
landroverkeith:
ok did that and with one wheel in the air and one on the deck no i cant spin it so thats the rear ok then ?
i presume the same applies for the front?
insa-disco:
my mate has a disco and has done 9 diffs in 6 months lol, his latest one is exactly how u described yours a loud bang and then some crunching, it turns out it was his rear diff and he stripped a few teeth off the main planet cog, but he can still drive it ........ish lol, hope this helps
Disco-Ron:
Keith,
It might be worth jacking up one rear wheel again, this time with the handbrake off, and the transfer box in nuutral, then spin the wheel, this would then spin the planet gears in the diff itself, and also run the pinion around the crownwheel, doing this will if it's broken, result in grounching type noises......
I had one read diff go, when it chewed a few teeth off the crownwheel, and i managed to do a whole days trialing with it broken, it didn't even have any oil in it, as the bits had smashed their way out of the bottom of the diff pan!!
