300 tdi with EDC engine
« on: May 06, 2008, 20:15:25 »
Right here goes.

I have a 300 tdi disco with the EDC fitted( Its a jap repat)
Whist travelling at 30-40 mph just below 2000 revs the check engine light comes on and the revs drop down to idle?  Then it picks up again and goes back to normal, this can happen quite alot. Have had it on test book a week ago and no fault codes displayed.  Yet today the fault has return again!!  Got it booked in tomorrow again for test book, anybody else had the same problem and any idea's what to do to fix it.
If not then the electric injection pump and airflow meter will be going in the bin and a manual injection pump is going on in its place.

Hi Bilko,

Having just had a quick look at RAVE I'd say the most likely place to find your fault is inside the ECU ~ maybe a dry joint or dodgy connector. If the fault was with an external sensor then I'd expect the ECU to show a fault code.

I'm not so sure changing the car as you suggest is quite as simple as you wrote and if the fault is still there then the light will still come on ... but it won't go into limp home mode.

Good luck with the troubleshooting  :D

Fault codes read.  There's a fault between the throttle potentiometer and air flow meter. It possible throttle pot knackered and thats nearly £300 +vat to replace and about the same for an air flow meter aswell,if they don't clear the faults then its a new engine wiring loom £1000 !!  :-o :-o  So me thinks that a good second hand manual injector pump is the order of the day.  Been told that converting to manual pump won't effect the running because engine ecu won't have control over injector pump and that removing airflow meter, will just become like a normal 300 tdi disco, and that their be no future electronic problems with the engine.

If it's an auto you might find it becomes a little more gutless without the EDC, that's primarily why it was fitted....

Thanks Thrasher.  But have been told now by 3 different companys that as i am just changing the electronic pump for a manual one and removing the airflow meter but still keeping the ecu in place then their shouldn't be any loss in power.  Mind you if there is it doesn't matter, don't tow anything and i'm not a speed demon but can still enjoy the pleasure of having a disco.

Sorry Thrasher for being hasty, just been told that the imoboliser won't work if i follow this route and that insurance would be null and void :x.
So now i'm on the look out for a good working throttle potentiometer.

Hi mine has been doing this for a while. It does every few minutes for ages then stops. It was annoying as hell yesterday but today it has behaved itself.I need to get a definative answer on the fault before I start buying bits.I put some veg oil in a few weeks ago and it didnt run too well on it.I,m wondering if it did something I didnt realise at the time.

Hi, i have had a similar problem after running veg oil in my 300 disco with edc engine check light comes on loses power then seems to sort itself out, and sourced the problem to some crap in the fuel line..... i flushed it through with one of those cheap hand pumps on ebay and it has been fine since.... i hope your problem is as cheaply sorted

You can still make the immobilser work without a problem...

A Land Rover Immobilser (when they work) cut the feed to the fuel stop solenoid and break the 12v crank feed to the starter... a little bit of re-wiring, and jobs a good'un.

Personnally...

I'd remove all the ECU gubins (don't actually understand why people are telling you keep it in place :?) and do a set up as per early 300Tdi Auto's (which didn't have EDC)... any power loss (as a EDC auto makes 122bhp, compared to 111bhp) can be corrected by a few simple tweaks of the injector pump!!
