sump welding

<< < (2/2)

ben_haynes:
there are companies that weld engines, Cylinder heads get welded if they Crack and Blocks that crack or have Conrods through the side get welded obviously by Specialists but a sump is like a sill, we weld Fuel Tanks at work, obviously not with Fuel in and Full of water for extra safety and a fire extinguisher at hand as usual

Range Rover Blues:
I've done it a couple of times and it's a PITA.  MIG can be porous and oil will find the tiniest gaps.  Possibly you'd be better off brazing or soldering it.  Tack a patch on with MIG then lead it/braze it.

Ford "big wing" sumps were often made this way.

Isn't this just postponing the inevitable?

If one part of the sump is porous... surely other parts won't be far off?

if t'were me I's be sourcing another sump.   :-k
