Changed the clutch on my disco 3.5v8 with LT77 gearbox, on the side of the box there were 2 pipes going to the oil cooler on the front of the car. When I removed these we lost some oil the oil was red in color. Am  I right in thinking this is from the gearbox or is it from the transfer box as I need to replace what was lost.

Am confused.

There are no oil pipes from an LT77 manual gearbox to the front of the engine. The oil used within an LT77 gearbox is ATF (automatic transmission fluid), the transfer box is EP90. The pipes to the front sound like an oil cooler for an auto box!! There are pipes on a diesel from the engine to the oil cooler which forms part of the radiator......

ps: your not referring to two small diameter pipes that connect at different positions on the gear/trans boxes....!! if you are, these are breathers....

pss: even as I type, I'm still more confused.., got any pictures?

I assumed he was referring to an after market oil cooler for the gearbox? Some people who tow caravans put them on manual boxes to keep them cool.

If he is getting AFT (red oil) out the engine then he is in trouble!

Careful, the clue is there to see, his is a 3.5 V8 and these DO have an oil cooler on the gearbox, the oil is ATF or can be MTF, just not EPanything.

It does not however interact in any way with the water radiator, just the hairy sauage behind the grille.
