Vitara fuel gauge

Help! the fuel gauge on my Vit doesn't work and the temp gauge only moves about a mm, the previous owner said that they did work until his mate put a new stereo in for him.
Is there a common earth for the gauges? Or have I missed a fuse somewhere? I have taken the binnicle out and all seems well in there :? :? :? :?
