More Power
« on: April 16, 2008, 07:59:08 »
Hi, I have had my Vit for a few months now. I am after an easy cheap way of squeezing a bit more power out of her. She is a 1.6 jlx carb 1991, oh and auto. I need torque more than anything as she will be rollering and harrowing some land soon. The other thing is when i got her i found some thread regarding the solonoid that locks the torque converter, but i cant find them now and i am in need of finding it and fixing it as 3500 rpm at 55 mph is making my ears bleed.

Cheers is advance

My 1.3 Jimny never failed anything I've attempted due to lack of power. I'd give the Vit a try first before you start looking to swap engins.

No I'm not looking for engine swaps just looking for more torque lower down. Just to make rollering and harrowing easier. It is a fairly steep hill that my field is on.

Unfortunately Suzuki produce revvy engins not torquey ones. What size tyres are you running. Maybe the answer is to look at modding the gearing so that the engin will rev higher relative to the rate it turns the wheels. Not sure what gearing mods are available for the Vitara but there must be something available.

you could fit a SU carb but you'll most likly need an adaptor if its anythin like a sammy
would a midget fall over doing the limbo???

Cheers just running standard wheels with A/T tyres.

What choke size etc is the best for the 1.6 is there any intake manifold mods that can be made or tubular exhaust manifolds?

Engin tuning is a very precise science, if you decide you want more power, where do you want it, most off the shelf mods help the engin breath more freely but generaly the biggest gains are produced at the top of the rev range. You say you want more low down torque. Usually more power at the top reducess torque at the bottom. To get noticibly more low down torque your talking re-profiled cams (talk to Kent Cams) and re-shaped combustion chambers. The mods suggested on difflock will allow your engin to breath and rev better, but if youve fitted over size MT tyres the engin will still struggle to spin them - hence my suggestion of gearing mods to make it easier to use the engins designed power curve. My back ground is tuning and racing motorcycle engins - usually if you want torque over power a smaller carb and lower compression works.

Thanks, I didn't know if there were any ram pipes or if anyone had experimented with opening out the inlet manifold a bit, or even fitting some sort of spacer between the carb and manifold. would a double head gasket have much effect.

Double head or base gasket might have effect - but its about trial and error unless someone comes along who has already done the work. What mods have you done already?

I have just put an su on my vit and it has made a world of difference.
It has more torque, more power and runs more sweet as the tick over on my vit with the standard carb was rough.

I would highly recommend doing the conversion  ;)

There is a sticky thread about putting an su on a sj herehttp://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?p=165433#165433
Its for the sj but it works for the vit too.
it is the hif 44 you want.
i got these bits to do mine

drilled and filled the manifold to fit the adaptor

i was given this to mount the choke and throtle cabble

this is mine bolted on, it runs great but i have not got the air filter on as yet as i'm making my snorkel fit
