The techic stuff.

"It is very similar to the Jeep Willys concept vehicle that debuted at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. There's really not much different between the two. Both are built on an aluminium frame. The Willys was a soft-top, but the Willys2 is a hard top with a carbon-fibre body. It is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 160 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. (Oddly enough, this is the same engine that the Mini Cooper S uses.) Its four-speed automatic transmission is coupled with a full-time 4WD system."

Looks a bit plastic to me to be a serious off roader,

I agree too much plastic - but something different. Not sure that I would want one quite happy with the ninety.  :D

check out the rear springs. Wierd suspension.

Looks like it would make a very good off-roader to me.

Coil-Over suspension (good articulation)
Tons of ground clearance
Superb Approach/Departure angles
Light, nimble
Apparently low CofG
Integrated roll cage
Good body clearance

A bit too much plastic, I agree...  but that's the times.

I think that the Willys concept vehicles will make a pretty good modern alternative to the Wrangler when it gets killed off even if the Willys has independent suspension allround. Ideally, if Jeep installed the Australian Kinetic suspension system that they have licensed for the last 3-years it would make an awesome off road vehicle. I suspect that the engine size would have to go up to power the hydraulics. http://www.kinetic.au.com/index.html

If the plastic 'coke bottle' panels are as cheap to replace as the Smart then nobody will be too bothered by offroad damage let alone corrosion.
