broken diff/ half shaft x eng removal tool any good?

(1/3) > >>

baron von ledwidge:
The diff has gone on the rear of my series land rover so i thought ifd ask see if anyone had had this issue and see how hard the job was to replace, i had a look and it looks like just removing the  half shaftts then the diff and swapping are my half shafts likely to be broken?

also does anyone have an old standard diff knocking about?
thanks

Rich_P:
Pull the halfshafts out, and check if they're broken.  Half shafts break far more commonly than the diff, since the halfshaft is a "built in" weak point so you don't break other major components of the running gear.

If the ends of the halfshafts are okay, then it's the diff.

baron von ledwidge:
ah ok buddy illdo that tomorrow is it likely that both will fail? tho i guessi couldhave been runnign one 1 for a while lol

If its half shafts you only need one to snap to loose drive

Picking one up could be a laugh this weekend though, getting the broken end out of the diff is also good fun sometimes, if you are lucky you may be able to retrieve it with a magnet on a rod

Not too difficult just a pain

If you cant get the broken bit out, its a diff off, still not too hard just cold in this weather

Have fun

baron von ledwidge:
yeh just took the half shaft out and the short side has snappedso illbe having toget those out dont thinkmy local landy breakers will be open which sucks probably just order one from paddock and do itnext week lol.  Does anyone know how good the xeng removal tools for the broken shaft bits are?

thanks
