Who says it needs to be a road only bike? You could always get one that can go greenlaning as well. Just don't do like a friend and miss judge the wading depth.

Bush Tucker Man:
I'm another one who keeps thinking about training/taking the test, even SWMBO has made encouraging noises in the past.
Then.............. we used to watch British, or World Superbikes, & she'd see the crashes, so it always got turned around to
"You're not having one!!!
Women!

It's the same (un?) healthy paranoia on unpowered 2-wheels too.

Although we don't have the advantage of 55watt headlamps & thick leathers, I know from experience that gravel-rash hurts just as much at 20 when all you've got on is Lycra

A friend once went 'one-better' (worse!)
If anyone knows HolmeMoss (A6024 on the West Yorkshire/Derbyshire border), he came off at a measured 55MPH after a front flat
Now, he was a mess for quite a while

As for bikes....thats more a personal choice...just remember you have to ride it...no one else !

This is true, don't be suckered into the trap of "an R1 or a CBR 1000RR are the best" cos you may regret it after a few miles, test ride different styles of bike cos you may be best suited to a sports tourer, a tourer or even a cruiser.

I've got to admit to the desire for a Ducati, but it's got to be the 916 shape
Still not sure about the new 1098 :-k :-k

stuvy:
Lycra! has as much protection as the hair on your skin i too have felt the pain of gravel rash and cycles!!

Have a stroll around a few bike shops and chat to guys when there with there bikes, and youl be surprised at how friendly they are to car owners!!
