high fuel consumption

beast5680:
my 1998 300 tdi es auto seems to be using  a lot more fuel than it ever used to. having checked all the fluids etc and poking about i cant see anything obvious amiss but it is still troubling me, what should i be looking for? would blanking the egr help improve things?

suggestions welcome
