Excellent, I have to write EIRs (Environmental version of FOI) I think I'll use that as a template for future requests.

Anyone else think it's a bit weird that the HMRC don't have security in place to stop them posting unencrypted CDs full of private data, but do have security in place to stop anyone reading what you're supposed to do if it's stolen :?
Freelander1980:

Small point, but I believe it wasn't HMRC that lost them discs!! They were sent by the INTERNAL mail system, which by a strange turn of fate, is run by a private company I.E. Capita!! its them that balsed up, not HMRC :police:

The fact the discs were lost is to my mind secondary, the real issue is that an unpriviledged user had/has access to private data which is outside of their remit, and that they are requested to put this on CDs unencrypted and to post it via any mechanism in that state.
Whomever is responsible for that has no idea about information security, VPNs, networking or how pish the postal system in this country is.
Note: not the fault of anyone in HMRC or any of it's contractors as individuals but a jolly good indicator of how messed up the entire system is.
