Loss of Drive

(1/2) > >>

Timbob:
Dear All, Please could someone shed some light on a probably expensive problem? On the way home yesterday the 300tdi 90 had a clunk and a lot of free play in drive train when pulling away. This quickly turned to a loss of drive. We got home with diff lock though. I have checked both half shafts and they are fine. Thats cheap fix gone! In gear out of diff lock the front prop moves but nothing atall at the rear one. I do hope that this doesnt point to a duff transfer box. It has not made any nasty noises or had a lot of play in the transmission prior to this. Any ideas?
Thanks
Tim

If it worked in difflock, but when out of difflock there is no movement and the front prop it turning, then the problem is somewhere in the front axle.

When you say you have checked the halfshafts do you mean at the back? There are CV joints in the front.

Take the plastic covers off the end of the front drive shafts and see if the end of one of them is turning in the drive flange. Hopefully you've just stripped the splines from a drive flange and it''s a cheap fix - about £10 for a pattern part (or £70 from LR  :'()

Cheers fella, I assumed it was a problem at the back, i indeed have not checked the front. I will do so. Thanks for your help

MuddyMike:
If the front prop spins it means something is broken in the front axle. Half shaft, diff, CV joint, stub, or drive flange.

if there was clunnking when going to and from drive
id say its a drive member or the diff
