Excessive Fuel Consumption in an SJ

Hey Guys,

I'm wondering if any of you can help me with the issue of excessive fuel consumption in my SJ410. We've just brought the jeep and weren't expecting to be topping it up this often. I couldn't tell you it's rough miles per gallon at the minute as we're only able to short it on short journeys (mainly because we're worried about running out of fuel!).

We read in the trusty Hayne's manual that it could be a dirty air filter, but would anyone else have other suggestions?

Thanks,

Team: Conquer the Void

umm if it had a dirty filter maybe it was tuned to run lean, but this wouldnt affect fuel..

if its running ritch then yes it could be... have a look at your plugs

you sure you dont have a leak?

We believe their maybe a hole int he fuel tank at the join halfway down. We've been running it with less than half a tank in but it is totally possible it's sloshing around whilst on the road. We'll check the spark plugs as they should really be serviced anyways.

kevan1:
does it have freewheeling hubs? also check the tyre pressures .

Hey Kevan,

Thanks for getting back to us. Being new to the whole SJ world could you just explain what freewheeling hubs are and how to tell if we have them. I'm guessing they are self explanatory in that they allow the wheels to move forward without needing the engine to drive them constantly?

Pete
