If you look at anyones profile there is the option to add them to your buddy list. They then appear slightly differently in the members online list. Apart from that the only thing I can see that it offers is the option to only get notifications of PMs from people on your buddy list.

More functionality may appear in the future, as the forum software is developed, what that may be I have no idea.

You can set a 'buddy' list in your profile. It lets you see if any of them are on line because they get highlighted in the list. Not sure if there is any other use for it.
