Was the ford deep?, if it was you may have taken some water through the air filter, and the noise *might* relate to a bent push-rod or maybe a bent con-rod.

As always its very difficult to diagnose noises over the internet, but someone experienced should be able to tell you by listening to the engine running.

Ant,

Which garage you going to ?

I'd suggest AJD down in Nazeing Glassworks - Andy and Martin know their stuff, and will always have a look/listen and give free advice !

When did you last do the cam belt. Belt could be slightly out. Same noise started coming from mine before it died

if you do the cam belt, treat her to a new pulley seals at the same time as it will save you further agro in the future.

:-k....If you think its possible water got sucked up, first thing i'd do is whip off the sump and check everything looks as it should i.e. no bends. Also its pretty easy to check the tappets rods etc. i've heard that the rocker arms can fracture aswell.  Dont know if its possible but can you post the noise from a recording, maybe from a phone etc. Its very hard to give accurate advice without hearing the sound.

Dose the engine run as smooth as it did without he noise. If not check the timing of the fuel injection pump.

Hope it helps
