High lift jack

aren't they just a normal fairly boring bolt ?

I don't think they do much more than stop the handle falling off (if it's the ones I'm thinking of) so I'm not too sure they have to be high tensile either, although it wouldn't go amiss I guess.

That depends on what is missing from the jack in question as rob said

Looking at my badly annotated and out of focus picture below (and ignoring the custom floor covering of tasteless pink carpet and Katy fur) I am assuming the Bolt "A" is missing, <comment edited for reasons given in next post>.

The problem would come if the Pitman Pin "B" has also gone walkabout, and to get the corrct item would probably involve speaking to Arbil or Hi-Lift direct.

Bolt "C" is described by Hi-Lift as a "Safety Shear Pin" and so should only be replaced with the correct part, but this does come in the jack overhul kit (that's why it's shiny at the moment)

And I have just decided that I disagree with myself and it is important that the bolt is correct for the job. In particular, as it is a pivot the unthreaded shoulder must be the same length as the original.

Overall, if I was in need of one I would try to obtain the correct item.

Range Rover Blues:
I don't have my handle secured anyway and the foot is held on with a clip.  I keep my jack in 4 main peices as it's easier to store and also doubles as a winch (hence the foot comes off) but also it's safer if you remove the handle, particulary when coming to lower the jack, if the mechainsm isn't in the right place the handle will give you a nasty whack.  For this reason I use the handle to knock the reversing lever down so I can stand well back.
