no reverse on auto box
way2deep:
as stated my mate has just bought a 1989 v8 auto all works fine forwards but there's no reverse .........could it be adjustment somewhere or are they prone for something going wrong inside the box ...thanks ..robbie
Range Rover Blues:
Yes the linkage is adjustable. Not very common to lose reverse though if they bust :-k
Make sure it's topped up properly with good oil.

thanks mate ,,,just out of interest before i look at it for him monday is the reverse on the same linkage as the forward gears or is the reverse on it's own connection .
Range Rover Blues:
Assuming you have the 4 speed then the shifter pulls a cable inner through a sleeve. This is then connected to the passenger's side of the 'box and in turn pulls a lever that is connected to the valve block inside the 'box. I can't rtemeber which gear you put it into to do the adjustment though.
Basically if it's not somehting ont he cable/selector that's faulty then it's somehting inside the box which is not good news. I wouldn't want to mess around inside one.

I don't know if this will help, but here goes...
Fluid levels are vital in autoboxes - way back I had an old Rover P6 that stumbled up the road... attend to the levels and, hey presto, smooth as you like!
However, if it needs internal tinkering... try Loughran Bros of Towcester for advice (01327 359167)
I know that they have a 'tame' gearbox guru based at or near Silverstone - not (yet) had cause to use his service, but understand that he is a fine fettler...
Like I said, hope this helps
Rob
