How to increase power?

(1/3) > >>

Lumbering Jack:
This keeps cropping up in my head quite a lot just lately and I either need telling its a stupid idea or kicking into life to do something about it

I'd quite like to take out the 300tdi that's in it and replace with a 3.9efi with lpg and auto box from and RRC.  I've heard of it done before but not recently and don't know just how much work is involved.  I'd probably have a whole rrc to use as donor so all the bits would be there.   I prefer the idea of the 3.5 on carbs for simplicity to work on but the 130 is a fair weight loaded up and with the trailer on so thinking every little helps  :-k

Anyone done anything similar?

Planning on putting a 110 hi cap body on to replace the quadtech body and thinking the lpg tank can fit in the gap between the body and the back of the cab.

So..........what's your thoughts guys?

[-X Personally I think you are mad
If you want more power fit a large intercooler, tweak the pump & up the turbo boost.  You will get somewhere near 150bhp & a good amount of torque.
For a better exhaust note fit a straight through pipe
Run it on a mix of 50/50 derv/veg oil in winter months & upto 100% veg oil in the summer months.

Sabo:
Listen to this.  I had a 2.5 na diesel in a 1986 110 CSW, 6 years ago I put a 3.5 carb in with lt77 box, 2 years ago I replaced the engine with another 3.5 which I rebuilt, both times I ran on gas.  Last year I put in 200tdi!
A V8 sounds wonderful and has a lot of power until you hit WATER, also it burns a hole in your pocket especially when you start adding things like sports ignition etc etc.
So I took mine out and put a good old NOISY 200tdi in it which I am sticking with, also upgraded the intercooler, put a straight through pipe on and it goes on!
If after all this you want a V8 I have one still in one piece since last used - 3.5ltr, also heard 3.9 have a tendency to heat up and crack heads but I'm sure others will tell you different.
Have Fun - I did.

Range Rover Blues:
I keep hearing this guff about V8s and water.  Drown a TDi and it's goodnight vienna, you'll be lucky if the rods don't come through the block.  Personally I don't go wading in anything above the sills as I don't like having to change wheel bearings every fortnight.

Anyway, a V8 with a missfire is still a V7 ;)

The V8 on LPG is a cracking engine, quieter and much smoother than a TDi.  Looked after they run reliably for a similar mileage to a TDi too.

I've heard about cracked blocks on 3.9s too.  I've never seen one, but I've heard........

That said you are looking at a lot of work.  If the power gains are there to be had form the TDi I'd start by tweaking that and see if it fits the bill.  A heavily loaded 130 will benifit from the torque of the TDi and the appropriate gearbox has a lower 1st than the equivelent V8 'box to help with hill starts.  That makes the TDi a nice towcar (though when the trailer tips the scales at 2 tonne I prefer an auto anyway).

Also with the price of fuel as it is a TDi will be more economical.  At the moment we're running the TDi rather than the 3.9 on LPG, though I'm having difficulties with the supply of Biodiesel blocking fuel filters.

Lumbering Jack:
Thanks for the replies guys, just what I needed (a bit of sense talked into me  8-[ )

Think I was getting carried away with V8 fever.

150bhp out of the 300 sounds good to me - just a case of getting around to it.  Do like the idea with the exhaust too, does it make much of a difference when done with the other mods or is it more for the sound?

running 50/50 veg/diesel whenever I can - does seem to go better than on neat diesel

how easy would it be to fit an auto box to the defender (and what would it come off of?  :-k )
