Interesting overheating problem on the 300Tdi
Range Rover Blues:
I'd echo that. Both 300TDi in the family have had their heads off this summer and both were loosing water. Not sure if it's a chicken/egg thing but I know Julie's was fine untill it overheated on the M1, byt eh time I'd got off the carriageway the damage was done.

Well, it's fixed now. The head gasket had blown between cylinder 3 and the nearby water channel. Just enough to pressurise the system pushing water out of the top of the expansion tank in the end. I guess the heaters stopped working first as the matrix is the next stop in the water circulation after the head. A new head gasket seems to have done the trick. It's running at a lower temperature than it ever did before :-k Maybe there was always a very slight problem after the last time I changed the head gasket which got progressively worse over the last two years.

Finally found out what the cause of the whole overheating problem was...leaky heater matrix (just like yours Cliff). Luckily I haven't driven it far enough since fixing the blown head-gasket to cause any problems. I'll be bypassing the heater on Saturday to protect the engine, and try to fix the matrix or get a replacement. Didn't notice the wet carpet under my feet due to the really nice rubber mats!
