What spares to carry

<< < (2/3) > >>

Disco Matt:
Should have mentioned I always have more than enough food, water, gas stove, matches, spare gas and a full tank of diesel when I go out. I was just wondering if I should carry anything in particular for venturing into areas where the phone signal isn't great and the breakdown people can't get to you. The only weak spots I could think of on the TDI were the serpentine belt (squeals worryingly if it gets wet) and the fuel filter.

TDi90:
for me:
big toolbox
spare fan and PAS belt
oh and a jerry can with derv in it
spare wheel
hi lift
UJ

when i go on a p+p or away for more then just the day:
spare halfshaft(s)
spare diff
spare propshaft
+all the above.

Good idea for a thread Matt. Should really start carrying some spares and tools with me in mine when I get her back (hopefully tomorrow! woohoo!). Tempted to keep an axle set of bearings in the back, but won't be getting 'em from my local factors again! Could have done all 4 wheels for what I paid for 1 kit today, but had to put up with it as I need 'em ready for tomorrow.

Belts seem sensible, and cheap enough to have too, same with filters.

muddyjames:
No one has said a steering linkage rod thingy. Mine bent on a off roading adventrue and had to limp home 80 miles with the wheels at horrible angles.

Just a thought.

bodgeitjo:
the main thing that caught me out was a cv joint.(but lucky enough youve got center diff :D) i also had a brake pipe split on me half way through a day out  thats not fun .
