Auto overheating
« on: November 11, 2003, 07:26:51 »
I have a big problem, burn't my auto box out while towing the caravan a few weeks back.

When I got it back set off for the weekend and burn't that one out.

Rebuilt again, set off and caught it this time, but it burn't the oil.

I've had a new oil cooler and pipes.

The garage is now telling me there is nothing wrong with the box. Is it that on the A roads I'm having to work the gearbox hard because
1 the engine need tuning
2 the 750 tyres are altering my gearing to much.

Help?

details 300tdi
caravan 1300Kg
ok solo

Hi,

Is anything else odd happening? Are the revs staying high in any gears? Have they checked the functionality of the torque converter?

The autobox on yours (N reg ISTR) is not hooked up to the ECU in any way, so it can't be a computer controlled problem, therefore you are looking purely at mechanical failures. The throttle linkages, the torque convertor and final drive.

The gearing is not an issue, and if your engine was bady tuned it would be sluggish, not burning out boxes! I assume when towing you drive in D? (I have heard that 3 is quite useful in the TDi auto with a big van!)

I'll have a hunt about and see if I have anything on file here....

Thanks

It's had 2 new torque convertors, so that shouldn't be an issue. As for the revs keeping high , not what I've noticed.

Spoke to Ashcrofts today and they said my mechanic was talking a load of B*****ks.
