You can also do it on the motorway. On the hard shoulder you'll see white sticks every 1/10th of a mile. Provided they are accurate 9almost always) then you can time yourselfover a measured distance.

All UK motorways are metric (little known fact) so the markers are at 100m not 1/10 mile [-X
