Mystery awful Rattles, Clicks and Clangs = loose Transfer box MUDSHEILD
Saffy:
The mudshield (FRC6121) on the front output shaft is driving me nuts. It's become loose and spins around making an awful metallic noise that sounds like the propshaft UJ has failed or a wheelbearing has collapsed or gearbox is about to die. Now and again it stops and then snatches with another scary clatter of a noise  Drove to mid wales and back like this. If I didn't know that it is actually nothing but the mudshield having wobbly I would have probably called for a man in big yellow taxi!
I have managed to fix this is the past by sticking it back in place with a big glob of grease and it went away for 6 months. I had tried a sealant but it doesn't last 5 minutes and then smells as it burns off when it spins again
Anyone know of any other quick fix before I bite the bullet and try and replace it?
stageonesimmo:
Now this is going to be no use to you whatsoever - But, that may well be whats making an annoying rattle at motorway speeds on mine - its the only thing i hadn't thought of -well done that man, have a bisuit.
mroxo:
It really wont take long to replace it and you know it makes sense in the long run!

I was under impression the flange fixing where special torque up like a Differential but turns out its not, so yeah will replace it shortly.
mroxo:
No more annoying noise from underneath but will just give way to a new rattle or squeek
