Its not always the wheel bearing but the culprit has more or less the same effect.  The bearing sleeve at the base of the stub axle (on which the hub rotates) is there to hold the drive shaft in place, if theres wear here it can allow the CV joint to run eccentrically and this knocks the sensor up out of its bush so that the air gap is too large and the warning lamp then illuminates, and no amount of fettling the hub bearings will cure that one I'm afraid (its what's up with mine on the RH side since I had a CV joint partially seize - this put loads of stress on the brass bush in the base of the stub axle and I cant be bothered to change it! All I do is tap the sensor back in if the light comes on and all is well again for a couple of months.....)

You can easily make up a simple test lead in order to activate the fault codes. By disconnecting the ABS relay, which if I recall correctly is the green one under the passenger footwell, you can get the ABS warning light to blink the fault codes. If you message me i can give you my phone number and discuss it with you. There is a post on this site that gives the full details, which i used to suss mine out. What i did find is that despite the usual fault of the air gap being to large or small, you could find that although the sensor may show the correct resistance when you test it, you can also have an open circuit if you wiggle the loom about at the sensor end. This was the cause of three of my sensors failing. With them costing around 200 quid each i took the decision to replace two of them and cable tie the loom in a position on one of the rear ones in a position that it worked. My ABS has been faultless for 8 months now. Range rover ones do fit and a chap on this site was able to sell me a few of his spare ones he had at a lot less than the $00 quid i was looking at spending. Top chap!!!!!
