I only used 3 images to make that one and then animated it in ImageReady. It's down to how you arrange the images and set their active time that produces the flash.

If you don't have ImageReady there's a free download called Movies13 that will do the same job.  ;)

Thanks! I'll have to try to get something suitable to work with when I'm next out. Could it tie two images together (if you took one with lights off and another with them on)?

Budgie:
It will do Matt, but you'll have to make sure you use a tripod and don't move the vehicle or the camera. Otherwise you could end up with the whole vehicle moving when you switch the lights on.
I can do one for you if you've got a photo.  ;)

Yep, have a tripod in the car (keep it in there as I use it for my dashboard cam mounting) so as long as it doesn't rain next time I go somewhere interesting I'll get some photos and have a play.

We'll call the photos:
1 - the original
2 - flash on one side (or headlight)
3 - flash on the other side (or roof lights)

If you want something similar to what I've done then you need them arranged in the following order:

1,2,1,2,1,3,1,3,1

I made the first and last visible for 0.3 seconds and the rest 0.1 seconds.

Instead of the strobe effect that mine produces you could go for a normal headlight flash in which case you use the original image, one with the lights slightly 'ON' and the third image with the lights full 'ON'. If you really want the effect then you could do the same to ground in front of the vehicle like this one:

But you'll need to increase the time that each image is visible for to something like 0.2 or 0.3 seconds. This is quite easy to do in a normal editing program as you can use the brush spray tool to produce the light as I've do in the one above.  ;)
