Thrasher, given it's a similar price, do you now wish you'd gone for the extra 20bhp?

Darn .. I could have got one of those *and* a 90!!! (and possibly still had some change.... )

Hi there,

Impressive looking truck... they've always interested me, would love to 'have a go' driving one for a week or too, but don't think I could do it all the time!  For those of us who don't know what these are like (and are also very nosey!!), would there be any chance of a pic or 2 of what they're like inside?!  :?:

All the best,
Nat

yea will take some next week a few people have asked what they are like inside. So to give you some idea. as you climb the three steps to heavan and sit in the comfy chair which is all air controled with its own air cushion there is a flat floor the auto grearlever is a stork on the steering wheel. i can stand up and walk around inside the cab easy and i am 6 foot tall. And when on the move they are very quite inside and its a v8 420bhp twin turbo diesel. got bunk beds in side which are about 4 foot wide and just under 8 foot long. loads of storage space. oh and if you keep your eyes open scania do track days when the no hgv licence holders can drive a full size 60 foot 44 ton artic. Which i must say for me is fun to watch

But is the urban legend true, that you can tip one over at as little as 12mph?

Would make it a bit more interesting. Should make all new drivers have a go, then they would appriciate the space required to manouver these rigs in built up areas.

You could get one to fall over at that speed but normally you would have a bulk liquard tanker behind you with all the liqued flowing around but normal driving you can throw them in to bends. Oh and they DO drift round roundabouts lovely

It must have monster torque though .... 'cos power wise it's only 20bhp more than my Land Rover

Do a torque comparison. :)

Ive tried to find out about the v8 R420, but the net says its not out till 2009. All i can find is about the R420 6 cylinder.

R 420 powered by Scania six-cylinder 12-litre EGR engine:
Maximum power:
420 hp (309 kW) at 1900rpm
Maximum torque:
2100 Nm between 1100 and 1350rpm

It may be a 6 cly then. just going off one of the other drivers who has one and i must say looking at the back of the cab towards the engine it does look like a v8. All i know is it pulls like a train

I can confirm they're not much good off-road! Two of my mates haul timber, and quite often require tows from forwarders in the woods! They pull away quick when they don't have a load on mind. One of 'em has an older Scania 420, the other (who used to own that 420) now has a DAF XF95. Another mate of mine runs tippers for the local Hanson quarry, 1 DAF CF 6 wheeler, then his proper one, a Scania (420 again I think) 6 wheeler with trailer, lovely bit of kit that is. He's now also debating getting an artic to join his fleet, yet repeatedly denies making any money ;)

How old do they get before they're sold off then? that one's a 54 plate.

WOW you lucky swine.

It is my dream to drive for Eddie Stobart. I go past thier Daventry depots at DIRFt most days, SO, if you see a refuse lorry coming towards you with the reg AY55 HTL flash and hoot as much as you like as it will REALLY annoy my woman driver!! :D I will be in the middle seat I expect

did you know they have a tractor unit, brand new, only done about 30km sat in thier ofice in DIRFT? Thats, right, it has never been used to tow a trailer!!

I can also confirm that they are utter pants off road. Watching them (bulk freight this is not ES) go onto the land fill site they get stuck very easily. They have to get towed in, then towed back then towed back off again by a caterpillar tracked bulldozer thingy. the day I see a artic not get towed during a tipping I will be dreaming!!

You can actually spend £150 of your hard earnt money on driving a HGV for an hour with an hours in classroom training at a place over Lincoln / Louth way. Web site is here if anyone is interested http://www.driving4all.com/search_exp_result.asp?advert_id=14939

It is my dream to drive an HGV. I am in the proccess of getting my provisional hgv2. I will be with you guys one day. (wheres the dreaming emoticon? )
