Disco front bearing transfer box

(1/2) > >>

skip2:
Hi new here so hope you don't mind my post, ive a 200 tdi disco and the front bearing on the transfer box is very loose. The shaft wobbles about and whine like mad, oil leaks as well, done about 180K

Been to the garage but they are very busy although had a look, before I go back after chistmo is it right I need a new box. Can the bearing just be replaced ? Does the whole box need to come out.

Its not a bad disco some months MOT left but the repair cost outweighs the value is it worth doing?

bilge rat:
you have probably have checked this but worth checking iff not, the flange nut is prone to coming undone, this will give you the same symptoms. drop the 4 prop bolts, and check the main flange nut. good luck. alan.....

if new bearing is needed peace of cake, new one from paddocks aboat £7 ish. the whole shaft comes out with bearing attached.

sorry should have said, box stays in just take prop off. might be worth  doing the rear one at same time mine went a couple of weeks after the front. little bit more involved as you have to take handbrake drum off. but still easy.(plus if that one fails you end up with no handbrake due to oil contamination on pads more expense   )

Interesting thread this.. my transfer box leaks slightly at the front, so i replaced the seal not long ago, still leaks, and whines like mad.... was gonna just throw another transfer box at it, but i might try changing the bearing, and oil and see what happens.... oh, and the seal again..!!
