SLOPPY GEAR STICK

LAND-ROVER-PIMP:
Hi all,

Not been on for a while, busy busy busy! Can't believe it's nearly Xmas!

My partner got home from work tonight and told me she was finding it difficult to engage gears on the Discovery, I took it for a quick spin and the gear lever has no spring to it, gear selection is fine. Looking under the Land Rover there is a short bar hanging down with a hole for a bolt, this has snapped. What is this bar called so I don't appear daft when I go to the parts department???

Cheers.

P.s What's it like to fit?  :?:

Iain C:
Hmmm, when mine did that it's the detent springs in the top of the gearbox.

Centre console off, drill out the riveted gearbox cover, and it's lurking under there next to the gear lever.

LAND-ROVER-PIMP:
Thanks for the quick reply!!

What will the broken bit of bar be I can see dangling down underneath? It has a bolt hole at the end of it but this has snapped thus causing the problem.

Iain C:
Tricky to know withou a picture!  Where you say "sloppy" what exactly do you mean?  EG mine was OK in the fore and aft plane, but slopped about from side to side, so when pushing teh lever forwards you might get 1st, 3rd or 5th!

AFAIK there is no bar that could hang down that would prevent correct gear operation, the lever goes in the top of the box and that's it!  Have you got her to wiggle the gear lever whilst you look at that bar and see if it moves?

It could be that the bar is part if the low range lever...do high/low and your diff lock still work, as these things seizing up underneath is quite common...

LAND-ROVER-PIMP:
It is just slopping about from side to side making it difficult to select 3rd gear when changing up from 2nd. When wiggling the gear lever from side to side theres no spring in it, no tension. As it's dark and raining not had chance to have a proper look at the short bar hanging down but had a quick look with the torch and it's definitely a short bar with a bolt hole at the end that has snapped clean in half. Will check the hi/low gears tomorrow and let you know. I just presumed seeing this snapped bar tied it to the sloppy gear stick problem.

I would have a look now but this red wines just at the right temp!!

Heres to Land Rovers!!  :D
