grinding noise on over run

(1/3) > >>

burgerman:
, Hi all, i have a 1991 V8 disco ( manual) and i have recently replaced all u/joints in both props, a rear diff ( not for the above reason) but for a while now i have had a grating/loose sound coming from gearbox area ( it seems) It only happens when i come off the gas pedal and reamins till i accelerate again, i must admit it has got to a noise level that something is not right :(   i have had a look/pull n push around under neath but not found a culprit as yet , i kinda have a feeling its a gearbox issue ? for the record the gears operate fine, and the noise is not any louder in any of the gears

 Any clues ??

Range Rover Blues:
OIl level?  water contamination?

If it's the gearbox it could just be noisy.

Guardian.:
mine did that, everything worked fine but made hell of a noise on overrun, it was the transfer box, put a spare one on and it dissapeared.
must have been a shot bearing in there somewhere.

Ja1983:
thrust bearing?

mines paggered, but luckily the clutch has started to die too.. so dont have to put up with it much longer!

andyb:
It could be either thrust bearing or the transfer box.

I think I would drain the transfer box oil and see if anything comes out with the oil, while the oil is out remove the transfer box bottom cover and have a good look. This will be a lot easier than pulling the whole box and checking the thrust bearing.
