Got home and tried both handsets again, no joy. Then i pressed the open button four or five times in quick succession and it unset. Did the same with the other handset and that worked too. Now they both set and unset with just the one press and at some distance. Normal three indicator flashes on set and one long on unset with interior light function. Strange, they both seemed to have lost synchronisation with the alarm unit. Will have to see if it becomes a regular event. So in true railwayman fashion, NFF, No Fault Found. Thanks for the advice given.

One problem they can suffer from is the 'clock' in the alarm fobs running as slightly different time to the 'clock' in the alarm unit.  There is an option in the alarm unit to change the settings so it allows a slight error to occur.  This is easily done via diagnostic kit (I can do this if needed, only a drive down the A38 away)

I can also check if any error codes are logged, and resync the fobs to the Defender.
