carbore:
Some CD apps use to much memory and if you are doing other things the PC stop working on the CD playing and carries on doing the other thing.  I especially fond this if I was playing/listning whilst ripping.

Disco Matt:
Aldi had cleaning disks recently - basically a CD with a couple of brushes hanging underneath and a bottle of cleaning fluid. You just put a drop on each brush, stick the disk in, then watch the machine try to figure out what you just fed it!

Note that these probably won't work with the slot-type CD players found in cars. Well, I've not felt inclined to risk feeding it to one...

 Will that clean the lens?

Evilgoat:
Could be dirty lens, a cleaning cd may help as mentioned above

If its an older drive the Laser may be failing, not worth repairng as a DVD burner will only cost you about £15. You'll find that you will have trouble with CDR and CDRW disks too.

It could be copy protection, take the disk out, does it have a 'CD Digital Audio' logo on it, if not, take it back and demand a refund, its not a CD.

Its possible its software on your PC running, Itunes/quicktime are a pain when it comes to audi cds. see what you have running and close down what you dont need. Always worth checking for spyware too.

The copy protecting ia a mahoosive pain as some car CD players, specially MP3 ones wont play them either. I have Dido, No Angel. And it only works in the CD changer, not the head unit for this reason.

Yes - the brushes clean the lens as the disk spins.
