Swivel grease?

(1/3) > >>

marjan:
With me being new to the green oval brigade you lot are going to get a lot of silly questions from me - it's your fault for persuading me to leave the Suzuki troop  :D  :D  :D .

The swivels on my 90 are seeping slightly and I have read that it is ok to put swivel grease in them instead of oil, is this correct ?.

fasthands:
One shot grease is what you need!! I have used this works spot on most L/R suppliers have it, and will know what you want if asking for One shot grease!

Terranosaurus:
Mark - I've just listed THIS on ebay. Could drop it down to you in Cas.

Litch:
Yes, one shot grease will stop the leak but what you are doing is masking the problem, not fixing it.

One shot grease is fine and I have no problems with it but if you are loosing oil then there are several things that could have happened. Either the seal has failed, the swivel is shot (pitted or just plain rusty) or the pin and/or bearing are worn (allows movement between the seal and the swivel). Investigate what is wrong and then decide on your course of action as it is possible that it is more serious than just a leak.

Assuming all is ok and it is just a shot seal and you decide to leave it to use the grease option then look at it like this. If oil can get out then water can get in which does not do the internals any good which will ultimately result in a rebuild sometime anyway.

Eeyore:
As a thought, if you swivels are seeping, it could be a sign that the preload on your swivel bearings need adjusting.

Easy to check - jack up one corner and grab the wheel top and bottom. Test for movement. If you grab eiter side of the wheel you will check the wheel bearings or steering. If there is any movement, you'll need to check if it's the wheel bearings or the hub moving slightly on the swivel (you may need help with this bit!).

I may be just a perishing seal in the hub, but in my expereince it's been the swivel pins playing games that have caused oily leaks.

Cheers
