Wheel nutt question. alloy and steel

(1/2) > >>

suggs:
was pricing up a set of the new ZU rims the other day, i was told ill need new wheel nutts as i currently have modulars which are steel and the ZU's are alloy. the nutts cost about £3 each

anyone know what the differance is, and why the nutts need to be different.

ive been offered a used set of alloy nuts taken off a set of freestyle wheels from a 300tdi Disco, are theses ok for a 200tdi 90

cheers

Range Rover Blues:
Steel wheel nuts fit into a tapered seat and the nut grips the steel, alloy nuts usually fit a flat seat but more importantly will have a steel washer fitted to them, the washer bites into the alloy then the steel nuts spins on the washer.

You'll probably find they have different torque settings and the alloy nuts have bigger heads.

However if the alloys woould fit the Disco then a set of Dsico nuts should do you just fine, provided the alloys will fit your hubs properly.

The nuts for land rover alloy wheels look like this

The taper at the bottem means they can be used on steel wheels, but does not contact the alloy wheel.

There are older style alloy wheels nuts which didn't have the taper or the shinny tin cap which in my view makes them superiour, those caps are prone to damage if you over tighten them  which is why a lot of the people I know stuggle to get a socket on them.

Early series and later vehicles like P38 or disco2 aside, standard steel and alloy wheel nuts both take a 27mm socket.

P38s & D2s take a 27 mm socket, well they did last time i took a wheel off,

also its not the over tightening that knackers the ones with the shiny caps on them, its the rust building up between the nut & the posh cover
