300Tdi Auto vs manual: really 5mpg difference !!??!!

(1/3) > >>

davidjmiller:
Guys,

going to look at a 98S disco 300Tdi in dark green. It's done 96,000 miles with a full main dealer service history. Full leather trim, 6 months parts and labour warranty. In excellent condition inside and out (photos seem to back this up)

2 questions - I've been looking at some of the posts which suggest a big difference in mpg of the manual (28) over the auto (23). Can that be right??

Secondly, how much would you pay???

Your excellent advice is always appreciated.

David

My 97 auto is returning about 27mpg and my previous 300Tdi, which was manual, did about 32. The 200Tdi before that returned an average of 36mpg.

I paid 2500 for my auto in July ~ higher mileage and only limited service history.

Range Rover Blues:
RRR is running a RRC in 300TDi auto, gets around 20 solo running round Wales and about 21 towing.

Should be better now as it's had a new head, injectors and loads of other stuff.

Wife's 300TDi manual only manages about 25 MPG, but then that's commuting with me driving.  That too has just had a head gasket and is promising better economy.

Anyway, to answer your question I'd expect an auto to use more fuel, but 5mpg sounds a bit much, depending on your driving style.

The Fat Controller:
my 300tdi auto driven to and from work every day at 55 to 60 mph is retuning just over 34 mpg.the vehicle cost me just over £1300 earlyer this year, after buying 4 tyres(pirelli 235/70h16's and a new short assembly exhaust)total spend went to £1570.it had 11 months mot and 4 months tax also

Hey Fat Controller,

nice to hear from you again. I realise I still have n't popped round yet but I will do one day, promise.

Your 300 does good on diesel, how many miles does it have on the clock??
Do you drive to work on that abomination of a road, the A14 ??

Best wishes,

David
