Discovery V8 mpg's - search did n't help
davidjmiller:
Thanks guys that's been very helpful in putting that one to bed.
I used to have the 110 V8 in the avatar (apologies to the new owner if you're reading this, it's probably really bad of me to have an avatar with somebody elses car on it!!). I loved the power and sound of the LPG's petrol engine and when buying my new disco the money would go further in terms of the initial outlay.
However, having thought about it a lot since the sale I reckon I always had trouble keeping the engine running well in between services. It would be great after the specialist had sorted it but within a few weeks I think the smoothness would begin to drift. Also, the tank took up a lot of space (I had mine in the "boot" cos I off-road) which I found a pain in the 110 - it would be unbareable in a disco. I got fed-up of going out of my way to the gas station all the time. I'd have trouble with water when I'm wading and finally, I do dream of driving down to Morrocco or the like and it would never happen in a petrol car even if it was LPG'd.
No, it's a 300 TDi for me.
many thanks,
David

As I've been using an LPG V8 3.9 since March 1999, I suppose I'm used to planning journeys to encompass LPG refuelling sites, which has improved greatly since there's well over 1000 fuel sites in the country (haven't actually checked how many today), but used to be around 300 in 1999.
I don't mind occasionally running out of LPG and doing about 10-20 miles on Unleaded, since it gives the chance to properly lubricate/wash the fuel injectors, as mine is not an injected LPG System.
Best Motorway average on LPG 19mpg at 60mph.
Average on Unleaded 18mpg, average on LPG 17mpg, a saving of ~31% CO2 emissions by my calculation.
Currently, I get LPG from a 24/7 Contract Gas Site within 5 miles of my home, or occasionally a local BP Site (52.9p, eek!).
I must admit to being a bit of an environmentalist, so am currently considering a 300TDi and elsbett conversion, to run exclusively on SVO, to make my transport virtually carbon neutral, and improve wading ability
:D

any ware between 10 ,18 lpg start only on petrol ?
JimsMowing:
Mines a 96 3.9V8i.
I run a gardening business and tow an Ifor Williams trailer daily. Towing can range depending on load from around 7mpg up to around 12mpg. With out it i have recorded approximately 16-17 around town driving ( i do have a rather healthy quest for kickdown!! ) and about 20ish on a run.
Im going to be selling mine very shortly as im after a defender with a turbo diesel or 200tdi engine. I want to run that on SVO. Plus i want to go wading!!
remmy7:
Mines a 4.0 disco 2 on LPG I get around 13-14mpg around town and around 16-17 on longer journeys. However I am content with it at the moment although my local ASDA have just upped the price from 42.9p per litre to 44.9p per litre. The best I have had on petrol alone was 20mpg on a long run where I couldnt fing any gas. As I only have two 36litre tanks it becomes a bit of a pain finding it and I have regular stalking trips up in the north of Scotland where LPG pumps are few and far between only five gallons of petrol capacity doesnt help matters.
Cheers Remmy7
