If you want a good noise out the back then a properly design exhaust system will be superior to one thats just had a larger bore straight through added on. Generally though the bigger the boar the loader the exhaust.

A good example are the exhaust on mid engined cars like GT40s, unfotunately there are no many Land Rovers that you could fit an exhaust like that into. They don't burble, just a smooooth bark turning into a roar.

notice how the manifolds don't just group the left and right bankc seperately, but group in firing order for best effect.

However and exhaust like that is tuned for mid/top end power rather than lower end power (higher torque) so ideal design changes depending on the terrain/speed your driving.

cardiff_gareth:
The Suberu Impreza WRX has a straight, flat 4 engine that makes a lovely grumble, not like the boy racer with a 1.0L Corsa with a big back!

--- Quote from: "Bulli" ---if you are wanting to make your disco better offroad, as in your previous threads , surely that exhaust is going to catch all over the shop

thats why i never fiited a 5inch or 6 inch pipes was going to but there was room. and over hangs plus looked silly too

the rear box or mounted on a custom backet as strong a rock slider mount also  i made a varied hight bit adjustment bolt.

tow bar is on there to and exhuast sit no lower than the normal back box

[]this is how i made it

you need the cherry bomb from demontweeks.co.uk which is 70 quid for s/s steel

rear box is a 3 in twin from cobraexhuast

cut at the end and a 4 inch exhuast tip cause there is only enough room back the back body mount for that twin exhuast it the same on the other side.

exhuast tip are exhuast trim cut and welded in instead of 50 quid tips from jetex there only 12 quid from motorworld.

rear boxes are 60 quid each

pipe work is straight from cherry bomb bend at 45 degs at the middle of the a frame joint where the spilt is then pipe follows the contour of the chassais to the back box. . you need reducers on the cherry bomb and back box. there is not a enough room for the same diameter pipework . every join is weld up the mounts a standard place where middle box is normally but u need brackets made for the back box .they are mount to the rear body mount.

with the pipe work u could fit different back boxes . seen quad dtm, twin monza  but it hangs a bit low or have it out though the side.

not a 5 minute job by anymeans . i got the system in pieces at the moment a mate need the back box but have finished it yet but got all the parts to do so.

. i ll leave exhuast bits in the gallary of my disco.

u could fit butterfly valves for a custom effect to but u do get slight back pressure[/b]

Jake:
My last Discovery was quite loud
It was a 3.5 V8 Efi with a Powerflow centre box and no rear box, exit from the side.
It sounded great, apart from when i used to leave for work at 6:30am
I always had to tip toe the first few streets at tick over because i was very aware of its noise
Would i have a loud car again?
Yes, but i wouldn't use it as a daily driver

I had pipecraft make one of there custom exhausts for me, it is side exit and only has a single centre box, its tucked way up inside the chassis so wont get pulled off or bashed when off road. its not loud but does let you know its a V8.
(they also de-cated it as well)
was a nice guy, and would recomend there work. There based in Basildon, Essex.
