Grinding noise

I just got finished with the same problem. Sure enough the rear brakes had work through the pads and it was metal on metal. Lovely sound it was. The shop was kind enough to grind out the grooves in my disc rather than selling me a new one.
My money is on the brake pads being the culprit.
